Founded in 1995 by Tom Drivas, Toronto-based Romios Gold Resources Inc. went on to acquire promising gold and base metal properties in some of the major mining camps in North America, including B.C.’s “Golden Triangle”, Timmins, Nevada and a large claim block next to the giant Musselwhite gold deposit in Northwestern Ontario. Through the many ups and downs of the exploration cycle, Romios has continued to advance these prospects and is now gearing up for major drill programs on several of the most exciting projects.
The Lundmark-Akow Lake claims in Northwestern Ontario were originally staked in the late ‘90s to cover eight kilometres of the same banded iron formation (BIF) that hosts Goldcorp’s nearby Musselwhite gold mine (> 7 M oz Au). Mapping and geophysical surveys led to the discovery of a >100-metre-wide schist zone with scattered copper-gold mineralization in the rocks flanking the BIF. This schist was interpreted at the time as a shear zone. Drilling in 1999 traced it for about one kilometre, but with sub-economic grades. In subsequent years, ground and airborne geophysical surveys were carried out and the results suggested that the mineralization might be better at depth. In 2016, Romios resumed drilling on the property and three longer holes through the mineralized schist revealed that it actually represents the type of alteration zone commonly found beneath many massive sulphide (VMS) deposits. This revelation led to one more drill hole the following year (2017), targeting a cluster of EM conductors beside this alteration pathway. Hole RGR-17-1 intersected the first massive sulphide occurrence in this region, grading 2.35 per cent Cu, 1.4 g/t Au and 68.2 g/t Ag over 1.9 metres. The geology suggests that this intersection is off to the side of the deposit and is part of a substantial hydrothermal system. Analysis of ground and airborne geophysical data has since revealed that this discovery is on the end of an eight- to nine-kilometre long series of untested EM conductors that may reflect similar mineralization. After acquiring additional claims along strike in 2018, Romios is now planning to drill these conductors in the summer of 2019. The claims also host eight kilometres of the same banded iron formation that hosts the Musselwhite gold mine about 18 kilometres to the south. This BIF is largely unexplored and a detailed exploration program is also planned here in 2019.
In British Columbia’s “Golden Triangle”, Romios has been exploring one of the largest claim blocks in the area since 2005. More than 25 showings are known on these claims, including several Cu-Au-Ag-Zn-(Co) skarns and manto deposits at Newmont Lake, as well as copper-gold alkalic porphyries at the Trek and JW Projects adjacent to the giant Galore Creek porphyry project, owned by Teck and Newmont. Romios expects to drill one or both of these porphyry prospects in 2019 in order to assess their overall size and grade potential. The Newmont Lake prospects are now under option to Crystal Lake Mining Corp. who are planning a > $3,000,000 drill program in 2019, as well as providing significant cash flow to Romios.
Romios also owns the former Scossa high-grade gold mine in Nevada and the La Corne molybdenum mine in Quebec. Attempts are ongoing to un-lock the potential of all Romios’ properties through joint venture and/or strategic partnerships.
